Public safety tax proposal gets media coverage

 Feb. 11, 2013

Dear MPOA Members and Supporters:

In his State of the City address on Feb. 6, 2013, Mayor Garrad Marsh called for considering a temporary half-cent sale tax increase, which would end after a set number of years. He told the Modesto Bee such a tax could raise about $13 million annually for public safety.

His proposal received considerable coverage this weekend in the Modesto Bee. On Saturday, a news story covered the pros and cons of the proposed measure.

On Sunday, the Modesto Bee editorial board weighed in on the Mayor's proposal, writing, "Ensuring the safety of the public is one of the most important jobs of city government. And Marsh is clearly making that his top priority."

We owe it to the citizens of Modesto have a full and healthy debate on this proposal. MPOA is looking forward to being part of that ongoing dialogue. As always, I invite your questions and comments about this important issue.
